OK... I'll give you a hint...It's not the original model for Gonzo the Muppet. I do know what this critter is BTW. For now, at least, you can't check the metadata for the answer.

Ok, time's up. Believe it or not, this is a fly! A Robber fly/ bumble bee mimic named "laphria thoracica". Though not nearly as attractive as the bumble bee it tries to resemble, it should probably be welcomed in the garden. This one was feeding on a garden pest at the time I shot these. Flies the size of bumble bees though?
